Luc Perramond, CEO of La Montre Hermès, explains to Plaza Watch the brand’s vision of time. Time is a very precious and high-quality commodity, but you cannot buy it. For somebody like me who never has enough time, I definitely think it is the most beautiful luxury we can ever dream of.

Time is a friend and Hermès has always had a special relationship with time. When a craftsman works on an object, he takes as long as necessary to make it in the best possible way in order to achieve superb quality. Hermès history shows its willingness to pamper and surprise consumers with exceptional pieces embodying a unique level of craftsmanship and innovation. We want to give our customers pleasure and enchantment by introducing them to Hermès time – Time to dream – through well-crafted timepieces combining technical excellence with outstanding aesthetic appeal. In daily life, it brings them a touch of fun and a distraction which they greatly appreciate. They like having the impression that they are no longer slaves of time and that they can play with it according to their mood or to the time of day.

The first model to express this philosophy was the Cape Cod Grandes Heures which expresses the time differently and according to customer’s expectations. Hermès offers complex mechanisms that are singular. The second step was taken with the launch of the Arceau Le Temps Suspendu three years ago.

The Arceau Le Temps Suspendu watch provides a chance to experience a break, an interlude over which time has no hold. The latest version on a 38mm diameter case features a pushbutton that may be pressed to bring the hour and minute hands to a halt at about 12 o’clock. Time is thus erased from the watch dial and dissociated from standard time that meanwhile pursues its invisible march. Pressing the button once more sets time running again. The gaze is instinctively drawn to the lively hand perpetually whirling backwards on the small sub-dial with 24 graduations, as if playfully taunting the passing of time. Behind these pirouettes lies a clever mechanism orchestrating a unique horo- logical complication exclusively developed for Hermès. Protected by two patents – one for its architecture and the other for the play-reducing gear teeth – the module is an addition to the Manufacture Calibre H1912. The running time and suspended time phases are coordinated by two synchronised column wheels: one driving the hours and the other the minutes. This 360° retrograde hour and minute mechanism makes time disappear without stopping the movement. Its uninterrupted running is displayed on the movement operating indicator, driven by a fourth wheel turning in the opposite direction.

This year, a new complication, which again offers a singular relationship with time, will be presented. We keep developing watches that capture the full Hermès essence and featuring alternative ways of displaying time. We will never stop surprising our customers with innovative products. Our mission is to make our clients dream.
